卡爾．薩根：「我們幾乎沒有注意到，我們已經進入自文藝復興以來史無前例的探索和發現的時代。」

卡爾．薩根 (1934 – 1996) 在他的書中這樣寫道。
過去幾十年，我們發現了 DNA 的構造、醫治了許多從前的不治之症、派遣了幾十架人造衝星探訪太陽系各成員、探險車好奇號發現火星有水流過的痕跡、新視野號剛探訪冥王星，而今天 LISA 重力波探測器就要升空了。如果卡爾．薩根仍然在生，他會是何等的興奮和感動呢？
可惜的是，我們眼看周遭，眼下盡是人類自相殘殺、破壞環境、迷信未除、謠言未止。人為的溫室效應導致的全球升溫，數據是如此擺在眼前，但我們仍然未開始反應。我不確定我們仍來得及扭轉這個局面。
諷刺的是，在卡爾．薩根的時代出發的航行者 1 號和 2 號太空船，現正飛越太陽系的邊界，向著未知的星際空間進發。它們仍然努力地向地球上的人類回傳珍貴的科學數據。
作為生於這個世代的我們，是何其有幸！若人類免於自我滅亡，這個時代的科學進程必定佔據未來科學教科書之中極其重要的一頁。
身在此世代而不自知的我們，能否避免於自我毀滅的命運，就掌握在我們這一個世代的手中。
費曼和薩根都說過，這是一個不科學的時代。我衷心希望，藉著普及科學，我們仍有一絲希望，踏進未知的未來世界，繼續探索。
